Georgia PTA Website Updates Protocol

In the past, updates and edits to the Georgia PTA website were made at the drop of a hat directly to the live website. This process, or lack thereof, sometimes causes errors or problems to occur.

We have implemented a new website updates protocol where any edits or updates for the website will occur on a hidden “staging” site. The edits and updates that will occur throughout the week will only show in the staging site. Once all edits and updates are complete and approved to “go live”, the staging site will be “pushed to live”, meaning the staging site with all the new updates will replace the live website.

This process will occur at the end of the work day every Friday as it is best practice for these types of changes to occur after business hours and over the weekend, when possible. Edits and changes of this sort can sometimes take up to 48 hours to propagate, which is why we can only guarantee that the edits and updates will be live no later than the following Monday.

What is Propagation and How Long Does it Take?

Name server changes usually take 24 to 48 hours to fully start working. This period, called propagation, is the projected length of time it takes for root name servers and cache records across the entire web to be updated with your website’s DNS information. Because of propagation, not all visitors will be directed to the new name servers; some visitors will continue to be directed to your old name servers on the old hosting account until propagation is complete.

How quickly visitors are directed to the new name servers depends on their physical location, internet service provider and some luck; it is not something the Georgia PTA web team has control over. Once propagation is complete, the newly made edits and updates will appear on the site.

There is no definitive way to tell when propagation is complete. During the first 48 hours, even if you are able to see your edits on site, your next door neighbor might still be seeing the site as it was prior to the edits having been made.
